Flexible Structures Based on a Short Pitch Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

We report on the realization and characterization of electro-responsive and pressure sensitive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) conductive photonic structures combined with the reconfigurable properties of short pitch cholesteric liquid crystals (aligned in Grandjean configuration). By combining ion-implantation process and surface chemistry functionalization, we have overcome the insulating properties of PDMS and induced long range organization of cholesteric liquid crystals, thus controlling both diffraction and selective Bragg reflection of light by means of external perturbations (electric field, pressure). We have characterized our devices in terms of morphological, optical and electro-optical properties.     

Georges Sagnac: A life for optics

Georges Sagnac is mostly known for the optical effect in rotating frames that he demonstrated in 1913. His scientific interests were quite diverse: they included photography, optical illusions, X-ray physics, radioactivity, the blue of the sky, anomalous wave propagation, interferometry, strioscopy, and acoustics. An optical theme nonetheless pervaded his entire œuvre. Within optics, an original theory of the propagation of light motivated most of his investigations, from an ingenious explanation of the Fresnel drag, through the discovery of the Sagnac effect, to his quixotic defense of an alternative to relativity theory. Optical analogies efficiently guided his work in other domains. Optics indeed was his true passion. He saw himself as carrying the torch of the two great masters of French optics, Augustin Fresnel and Hippolyte Fizeau. In this mission he overcame his poor health and labored against the modernist tide, with much success originally and bitter isolation in the end.     

Outstanding Quadratic to Septic Optical Nonlinearity at Dipolar Alkynylmetal-Porphyrin Hybrids

Porphyrins are important macrocycles with applications in several areas including therapy, catalysis, and sensing. Strong nonlinear optical (NLO) responses are the key to fully exploiting the potential of these biocompatible molecules. We herein report that certain metal-alkynyl donor/nitro acceptor-functionalized porphyrins are attractive candidates for NLO applications. We show that specific examples exhibit record quadratic optical nonlinearity, exceptional two-photon absorption, and outstanding three-photon absorption, and we report the first porphyrins that exhibit four-photon absorption. The two-, three-, and four-photon absorption maxima are found at the corresponding multiples of linear absorption bands that time-dependent density functional theory assigns as admixtures of porphyrin-localized π*←π and donor-porphyrin to porphyrin-acceptor charge-transfer transitions.     

以联席会和竞赛为载体构建实验教学改革交流的新平台——浙江省高校化学化工实验教学中心主任联席会暨化学学科(实验)竞赛10周年回顾

介绍成立浙江省高校化学化工实验教学中心联席会(以下简称:联席会)、举办化学学科(实验)竞赛的背景及发展情况。以联席会和竞赛为载体,建立了全省实验教学研究与改革的交流平台,扩大了实验教学示范中心的影响力和辐射面,推动了实验室建设、课程建设以及人才培养等各项工作,取得了丰硕的教学成果。     

物理化学教学研究会第三次会议纪要

物理化学教学研究会第三次会议以物理化学实验教学改革与建设为主题,介绍了教指委制订的实验教学建议内容,并就今后的物理化学实验教学改革进行了交流和研讨。本文介绍了物理化学实验的特点、当前的改革进展及其局限性,总结了部分高校在实验的目标导向设计、教学模式改革、教学理念和方法改革、教学达成度考核设计、实验新原理新方法引入等方面的做法和经验。论述了近期需要开展的重点工作。对今后的物理化学实验教学改革和建设具有一定的指导意义。     

Non-linear Heat and Mass Transfer During Convective Drying of Kaolin Cylinder Under Non-steady Conditions

The self-consistent model of heat and mass transfer during convective drying of capillary porous media describing both the first and the second periods of drying is presented in Musielak (Wydawnictwo Politechniki Poznańskiej, seria Rozprawy, nr 386 (2004a); Chem. Process Eng. 25, 393–409 (2004b)). The results of simulations of processes in steady conditions are shown (Musielak Wydawnictwo Politechniki Poznańskiej, seria Rozprawy, nr 386 (2004a); Chem. Process Eng. 25, 393–409 (2004b)). The main aim of the present work is to compare experimental results with those from numerical simulations. Three convective drying processes have been performed experimentally. The first and the second periods of drying are considered, during which the humidity of air in the dryer changes due to evaporation. The first process is used to establish drying parameters, whereafter the two remaining processes are simulated. Good agreement between experimental and simulation results is found, both qualitative and quantitative.     

Power spectrum in the MIM waveguide with single tooth-structure and nano-structure detection

The paper proposes the metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguides with different tooth-shapes (rectangle-tooth and triangle-tooth) and calculates the corresponding power spectrums by discrete Fourier transform. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation results show that the spectrum transformations reveal the significant differences in the two structures with the same tooth-depth, such as amplitudes, amplitudes difference and spacing of the two peaks. The study will be useful in waveform modulation in the communication wavelength. Furthermore, the spectrum may also be used to detect different nanostructures based on the corresponding transformations.
